Energy transformations under strong ecological constraint The idea of an energy “transition”, a process that can be controlled in a relatively stable and predictable world, seems to be coming to an end. Even the IPCC now calls for fast and radical energy “transformations”. However, despite the awareness of the climatic urgency and the dramatic loss of biodiversity, which is actualized in particular in a series of demonstrations and struggles, the climate issue is too rarely linked to the issue of energy. In this Majeure, we explore what these energetic transformations could mean, as we look for the right scales to take action and narratives that are relevant to inspiring collectives.

Rythmanalysis of  energy-societey-climate relationships

Drawing inspiration from Lefebvre’s rhythmanalysis, I consider the energetic as well as the spatiotemporal constitution of rhythm and how this brings into view the polyrhythmic interweaving of energy flows in everyday life, as well as the relationship between the “artificial” techno-energy of energy systems and the “natural” energetic exchanges of planetary movements, ecological systems and organisms (including humans). I follow a thermodynamic, materialist understanding of the energy and of rhythm, in order to outline a number of propositions about energy-rhythm relations and co-dependencies, and in order to explore implications that follow for pursuing strategies of low carbon transformation within and outside of energy systems. ]]>

The “recoverable part” Between the “meshes” of  the  bioeconomic program

The contemporary processes of energy transition are deeply challenged by Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen’s thought. Do these processes contribute or not to slow down the physical process of entropy ? How can we make the difference between the processes of transition that generate new impacts on the environment and the climate, and the ones that effectively contribute to reshape our relationships to the Earth and its resources ? The paper’s proposal is to continue, in the wake of a theoretical effort engaged by Georgescu-Roegen, thinking altogether the relationships between energy, matter and space. To do so, it gets inspiration from Simondon’s approach of the process of technical innovation, which last is less ruled by technological breakthrough but efforts to invent new developments from previous outdated technological assemblages and socio-geographical heritages. From this point of view, all the energies and materialities invested in the current processes of energy transition are not lost if we learn from their uncertain developements some lessons to steer the next experiments ones and make ourselves more conscious of our interrelations with Earth.]]>
